When performed according to sound orthopedic and sports medicine principles, the barbell squat can be superb for conditions such as knee arthritis, back pain, plantar fasciitis, SI joint dysfunction, obesity and many others. However, the barbell version of the squat is highly advanced and not recommended for beginners or those with highly irritable conditions, as this squat version requires intensive trunk, pelvis and lower body coordination and strength. If you want to minimize stress on your back and knees, take note of how deep we recommend squatting here.

We strongly recommend that you do not attempt to perform any of our exercises without formal training from our physical therapists so as to avoid potential injury. The exercises shown have specific purpose and yield benefits when performed in conjunction with a complete therapy program that is customized to each patient. The only way this can be initiated is through an initial evaluation.
